Can you describe your business?

I’m a freelance writer and content creator. I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors and was told I was a good writer. After college, I was running heavy equipment for a living, which was fun, but it was a lot of time away from my family, so I began writing on the side. After several months of making a decent side hustle, I decided to go full-time and I haven’t looked back!

How did you land your first client?

I went to freelancer job posting sites and found postings that I had experience in, specifically the outdoors and applied. I still write for the first website to hire me!

What difficulties did you face that you didn’t know you would when starting your business?

Keeping track of taxes and leaving room to learn and better myself. I can get caught up in always working in the business and not working on the business.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of running your own business?

Having the flexibility to take off and attend my daughter's school activities.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is considering starting a business in your industry?

Get writing! I’ve gotten a lot better by taking courses, but once I began writing and learning what website owners and editors were looking for it got much easier.
