Can you describe your business?

Umanzio and Associates is a consulting firm that focuses on small businesses typically 5 million in revenue or below. We provide Business Coaching, Marketing Consulting, Custom Life Design Services as well as other Consulting services for entrepreneurs, small business owners, executives and individuals alike. We serve those who are seeking to not only improve their results in business but their experience in their life as well. We believe that anyone can accomplish all they desire and build a life of choice — with right support and training. We work with individuals, groups and businesses exactly where they are now and guide them to where they want to be.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, and owned a small business in the past before wanting to go and help others learn from my experience. I also worked within the sports entertainment industry as well as private equity.

How did you land your first client?

I started this business by networking with some close friends who had entered into the franchise space who had not been given the proper tools or training to succeed in the future and I saw an immediate need for so many in that industry. They immediately asked if they could hire me to come in and help create some organizational structure as well as teach them all they needed to know about the financials of the business.

What difficulties did you face that you didn’t know you would when starting your business?

My biggest difficulty that I faced when starting my business was becoming complacent. Complacency can be a major threat to a growing business. Assuming that you will continue to be successful simply because you have been in the past is very unwise. Regularly revisiting and updating your business plan can help remind you of the changing market conditions and the need to respond to them.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of running your own business?

The creative freedom and personal satisfaction. As a business owner, you'll be able to work in an industry that you really enjoy. You'll be able to put your skills and knowledge to use, and you'll gain personal satisfaction from implementing your ideas, working directly with clients, and watching your business succeed and grow.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is considering starting a business in your industry?

My advice would be to sit down and make sure you’re going into this industry with the right intention. This business can become very fruitful but takes quite the toll on you emotionally and mentally. You’re plugging yourself into the heart and emotions of business owners who are trying to become successful entrepreneurs and that is no easy task. You can expect late night phone calls or texts from tired business owners who are contemplating their next move. You can expect smiles and celebrations when things are going well which is always the positive side of the business but there are more tough days than easy ones. You have to be willing to listen and listen well. This business requires you to be able to be the voice of reason and separate logic and emotional decisions that will benefit the business as they move forward each year. If you’re wanting to serve and help others then this is the greatest career you can have to make an immediate impact on someones financial growth.
